Crewing Jobs for Racing

Whilst most of these jobs are shared between both the helm and crew, it is wise to be at least familiar with them so to remind the other person in the boat of the job they should be doing at that time if they forget!

Pre-Launching

  • Bungs + hatches in.
  • Check tide times + write them on the boat.
  • Sign on.
  • Check the course.
  • Drinks + Food.
  • Watches.

 


Pre-Start + Start

    • Check Kite + ropes rigged correctly.
    • Swatcher + Rig tension set ok.
  • Do a beat on Port + Starboard to get numbers. (Compass)
  • Do a run to get numbers. (Compass)
  • Check Tide on the course
  • Get the start guns
  • Check line bias + Transits.
  • Give good countdown (6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0.50, 0.40, 0.30....)
  • GO!
  • Speed off of the line.
  • Height, Pace, Numbers. (Compass)
  • FLAT.
  • Where's the breeze?
  • Height, Pace, Numbers. (Compass)
  • Can we tack if needs be?

 


Windward Mark + Run

  • If approaching on port lay line, is there a hole to slot into?
  • Will it be a bear away hoist or Gybe hoist?
  • Round Mark, Kite up bar 12", board up, outhaul off, Downhaul free, cunningham off.
  • Leeward heel. KITE

  • Clear air, where's the breeze? KITE
  • DOWNWIND GATE? KITE

Leeward Mark + Beat

  • Board down, Drop kite, Outhaul on, Round the mark.
  • NUMBERS, If low / dirty air consider tacking if clear.
  • Which side paid last?
  • Height, Pace, NUMBERS.
  • Flat.
  • Tide time?
  • Where's the breeze?
  • Windward gate + Shortened Course flag?
  • Height, Pace, Numbers.
  • Flat.
