OK, so let's get the moral of this story out of the way first. You are going to the Inlands in October, which, being in the equinox, there are bound to be strong winds. The boat has been sailed hard all Summer and not let you down. So you need to check her out for wear and tear all round at least a couple of weeks in advance and give her the TLC she's earned.

Guess what ? Too busy enjoying the sailing and busy at work so it didn't get done. Result, half way round a seriously windy Inlands course with a huge grin factor and bang goes the kicker. The strap over the boom gave up after about 6 years of hard sailing. Should've gone to Specsavers!! (Other spectacle providers are available! Wink )

Preventions provided by Andy Gould (ISO 2000 National Champion).

  • To stop leaks:
    • Remove every fitting and re-seal them
    • Remove the pole and put filler in where it goes through the bow.
    • Drill a tiny 1/16 inch hole in the back of the wings (prevents a vacuum forming that sucks in water).
    • Also put bungs in the back of the wings to let any existing water out.
  • To stop the spinnaker tearing:
    • Put filler in the corners of the spinnaker chute.
    • Tape up everything in sight, including the block under the chute.
    • Spray everything with PTFE.
