ISO Northern Circuit - Ullswater YC (7th & 8th August 1999)
The fifth round of the ISO Northern Travellers' Series took place at Ullswater YC over the weekend of 7-8 August in light shifty conditions that were a delight to the pond sailors in the fleet, but which caused much gnashing of teeth among the boys from the seaside.
The first race on Saturday saw Dave Burke/Stefan Lucas take the best of the wind to round the first mark with a good lead, only to give it up by finding a quiet hole to sit in while Graham Shaw/Mark Robinson found better conditions to hit the front and take the race. In race 2 Fred & Tom Murphy put in a dogged performance in the rain to push Shaw/Robinson all the way to the line.
On Sunday the wind increased to a steadier force 2-3 and race three saw Murphy/Murphy much closer to Shaw/Robinson, only losing out by choosing to sail too deep and travel too slowly on the downwind legs. In race four Murphy/Murphy took the lead for a while but again lost out along with Burke/Lucas when they both ran aground. In race five Jonathan Dearden and Mark Brown came to the front but found the conditions too unpredictable to remain there, allowing Shaw/Robinson to take the honours.
